An often forgotten, but essential forest in our ecosystem is the kelp forest. If you’ve been a follower of Big Wave for a while, you’ll know how passionate we are about the preservation and protection of our kelp forests, both globally and right here at home.

So, on this int. Forest Day, we want to celebrate our local Sussex Kelp Recovery Project. We’ve been involved with this pioneering rewilding project since 2019 when we made our campaign film with Sir David Attenborough, Help Our Kelp.

Since that campaign, we’ve seen the introduction of the landmark Trawling Byelaw in 2021, and subsequently the Kelp Recovery Project is now celebrating two years of ecosystem recovery and the protection of over 200 square kilometres of seabed. It just goes to show, amazing things can happen when we step up together to protect our environment.

Kelp provides a vital habitat, nursery and feeding ground for scores of different fish, crustaceans and other marine animals, as well as being a carbon sponge. Kelp soaks up huge quantities of carbon, improving water quality, and of course helping us battle climate change, so it really is an essential part of our ecosystem and our survival. As such, we couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of this story, and we’re so excited to be seeing such incredible progress and signs of recovery. We can’t wait to see the further recovery over the next several years.

As a wildlife and marine focused production company situated right on the coast, we love to hear about wins for the world’s oceans. So this week’s announcement of the High Seas Treaty has us more excited than ever! 🌊

More than a decade since negotiations began, cheers rang through the UN Headquarters on Saturday night as the High Seas Treaty was finally agreed. Until now, there had been no legal mechanism to set up marine protected areas (MPAs) on the high seas. Thanks to this agreement that has changed, and the treaty encompasses nearly two-thirds of the ocean outside of national boundaries 🎉

Jessica Battle, leader of the @wwf team in the negotiations, said that this landmark deal means, “what happens on the high seas will no longer be ‘out of sight, out of mind”.

In our upcoming show with @lovenature @blueantmedia and the amazing @lizziedalywild, we look at Australia’s multitude of unique ocean ecosystems and investigate what we can do to protect them.

Something fun is coming up this week! Tomorrow, our MD Kirstie McClure, and our Director of Natural History, Emma Ross, will be at the Speed Meet Networking Event hosted by the Brighton Production Hub, to chat all things telly.

Since moving to Brighton last year, we’ve seen amazing growth, and got to work with fantastic off screen talent. It’s amazing to see the industry thriving in Brighton and we are really excited to be involved in this event.

Coming off the back of multiple international shoots, we have lots of fresh content coming in 2023 and 2024, so we’re on the look out for fantastic new faces to join the team.
