Battle for Shark Mountain

Shark Experts Craig O’Connell and Ryan Daly are on a mission to investigate the secret location of ‘Shark Mountain’- a giant fossilised sand dune off the east coast of Africa, where few humans go. Rising from the depths, this 100 foot high marine oasis is home to hammerheads, tiger sharks, spinners and blacktips, but it also attracts vast numbers of migrating bulls – one of the world’s most aggressive and dangerous sharks.

The Mission

By attaching acoustic tags to more than 50 them, Ryan has followed the bull sharks’ movements and discovered that every year, they make an extraordinary 3000 mile journey from South Africa to visit ‘Shark Mountain’. But after more than a decade of research, he still has very little evidence to explain why.

The Mystery

To try and solve this mystery, for the first time Ryan, Craig and their team of dive specialists stakeout the mountain with remote cameras rigs, attach fincams to sharks and dive the pinnacle of the mountain to get an up-close view of the deadly predators who gather here.
Along the way, they face many challenges. The remote location makes it a high-risk operation. With no jetty, they must launch their boat through surf that’s been known to flip boats. But the dangers skyrocket when they enter the water. Powerful currents around the mountain threaten to sweep them away. And as they install the remote cameras, Ryan and Craig come face to face with large numbers of sharks.

The Revelation

Their investigations reveal the sharks have a rival for supremacy on ‘Shark Mountain’. Under the cover of darkness, Ryan suspects the bulls are going head to head with an ocean-going 5ft monster of a fish, the Giant Trevally. On a full moon, the GTs gather at the mountain in their thousands to spawn – the largest aggregation ever recorded. The vast shoal should make an easy feast for the visiting bulls but no one has ever witnessed an attack. Could it be down to the GTs’ killer reputation? Around the world, there are eye witness reports of them bashing sharks in the gills until they bleed out. If the bull sharks are feeding on them, how are they doing it?

Brand new evidence gathered on ‘Shark Mountain’ reveals that bulls are not the brainless killing machines many have pegged them to be be but patient and calculated predators, that wait until the GTs spawn to pick off the distracted fish. It’s the ultimate tactical victory in the Battle for Shark Mountain, and one that could change our understanding of bull sharks forever.
